Onyx is a breakthrough material for use with the Markforged 3D printers. It is a material designed for printing stiff and strong parts that look good enough to be used for customer-facing assemblies.
Onyx is based on a tough nylon and it gets its strength and appearance from chopped carbon. Chopped carbon is a free-flowing material suitable for high-temperature 3D printing and it also has excellent chemical resistance.
Onyx can be used on its own to create parts with a stiffness equal to or greater than standard thermoplastics, or it can be used alongside Markforged composites, including high-temp fibreglass, fibreglass, carbon fibre and Kevlar. Parts printed with Onyx are strong and durable, however they can be taken to a whole new level with composite reinforcement (for example, parts embedded with carbon fibre CFF have the strength of 6061 aluminium).
In terms of appearance, parts printed with Onyx are a matte jet black. However, the surface is not smooth. Onyx has a unique texture and appearance courtesy of that chopped carbon, which creates hundreds of subtle lines. Depending on your part’s design, these lines can be vertical, horizontal, perpendicular or parallel. The net result is end-use parts and prototypes that look excellent - and of a quality that is suitable for most customer-facing assemblies.
