For the manufacturer of the #1 Most Used Desktop Printer 2018, there's a new printer around – the Formlabs Form 3.

The Form 3 is a Low Force Stereolithography (LFS) printer. This new technology balances speed and detail to give intricate prints quickly. Adaptive layer height allows for you to print the non-detailed parts of your model more quickly (at a lower resolution), whilst retaining the high resolution required for the intricate areas.

LFS gently flexes the tank to release the newly cured layer. This technique allows for much less force on the printed layer and no lateral peel force is necessary. Because of this, the supports are very light touch – a simple twist should remove them completely from the model.

The Form 3 brings in the ability to set off a print remotely. Orientate and support the model as required in PreForm, Formlabs’ printing software, and send it to the printer from wherever you are. Design and prepare your model at home in an evening and come into the office to have it printed in the morning.

For those of you already familiar with the Form 2, you’ll be pleased to know that your cartridges, build plates, finishing kits, Form Wash and Form Cure are all compatible with the Form 3. The only things that are not cross compatible are the tanks due to the different peel mechanisms.

There are ten Formlabs resins that can be used with the Form 3 immediately, these are: Grey, Black, White, Clear, Draft, Tough, High Temp V2, Durable, Castable Wax and Dental Model. Others are in compatibility testing and certification and should be released shortly. You can also use third-party resins with the Form 3 by using Open Mode.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the common questions we get for Form 3 Complete Package, if you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to email web@goprint3d.co.uk or phone 01765 540 115.

Can I use Form 2 consumables with the Form 3?

Cartridges, build platforms, finishing kits, Form Wash and Form Cure are compatible between the Form 2 and Form 3.

Tanks are not compatible between the Form 2 and Form 3.

Can I use the Form 3 for biocompatible printing?

Biocompatibility is certified for an entire workflow. This is in process for the Form 3 but has not yet been finalised, so at the moment the Form 3 is not recommended if biocompatibility is required.

How is the Form 3 different to the Form 2?

They use different technologies. The Form 2 is a stereolithography (SLA) printer, the Form 3 is a Low Force Stereolithography (LFS) printer. For a deeper comparison please see our downloads section.

Founded in 2011, Massachusetts-based 3D printer manufacturer Formlabs are one of the leaders in the desktop-class stereolithography (SLA) 3D printer market.

Since being founded, Formlabs has invested considerably in research and development to create and manufacture what is without doubt an industry leader for desktop 3D printing - the Formlabs Form 3.

Utilising stereolithography as opposed to the better-known fused filament fabrication 3D printing process, you can print high-resolution models that you wouldn’t necessarily be able to with an FFF 3D printer. This reality has put the Formlabs Form series of 3D printers in engineering, design, research, medical, dentistry, art and many other industries that require consistent, high resolution parts and models.
