All Ultimaker 3D printers have an open filament system, meaning that you can use whichever Ultimaker compatible filament you like to print your designs.
Ultimaker’s range of 3D printers, including the Ultimaker Original+ and Ultimaker 2+, utilise fused filament fabrication (FFF) technology. In other words, they extrude molten plastic onto a build plate layer-by-layer to form a 3D object.
The filament types supported by the Ultimaker range are ABS and PLA. However, you can also safely use PLA/PHA filaments such as those made by ColorFabb, to achieve designs that are not possible with a single-colour filament.
Which filament should you choose? The Ultimaker filament best for your designs depends on the complexity of your proposed model. ABS is stronger than PLA, however PLA and PLA/PHA has the potential to show better detail when printed at a lower resolution.
